Take a peek into the workshop where one of my favorite local artists creates beauty in useful objects.

Long Island native, JB Townsend moved back to Long Island, New York after spending several years in Missouri. He searched for the perfect place to house his potting studio. After several months of looking, he and his mother, Mary, visited Scarcella’s, the local florist, of Locust Valley, Long Island. An idea occurred. Mary suggested that JB ask the owners if they would allow him to transform a storage area. This area would become his Potters studio. This transformation created a magical atmosphere that has become one of my favorite spaces to visit.

I love great food, great art, and great people who create beautiful and useful things!

For me, standing in the places where the artwork is created is so magical. Knowing the artist, or the person behind the art shows us why the piece was created. Each piece of pottery responds to a thought or a moment in time that has occurred in JB’s mind or in his life. It also responds to the energy present in his workshop.

The day I visited JB at his studio was a beautiful day of reflection. I arrived ready to do some holiday shopping and to have a little fun experimenting on the wheel. I also learned more about the inspiration for his space and the love of JB’s mother, Mary Gay Townsend, who was smiling down on us from above.

I had never met Mary Gay, but I realized what an amazing person she was from listening to JB and also knowing others who were her friends. Mary Gay Townsend graduated from Georgetown Washington University and the French Culinary Institute. As a young mother, Mary owned and operated a local catering company. Over the past thirty years, Mary was an incredible force, a talented entrepreneur, and the biggest fan of her son and his passion for creating pottery. The Townsend family lost Mary Gay on Thanksgiving day, November 28, 2024. Her spirit lives on through her husband, their four children, and the many lives she touched.

In the second video I have fun creating small bowls on the wheel! Thanks JB!

When shopping for the loved ones on your list this holiday season, take time to visit the local small businesses in your community. Each local business has a story to tell. a reason as to why they exist. Local small businesses are the heartbeat of our neighborhoods and are valuable assets. Small businesses are filled with love and appreciation for their customers. Remember that as you venture out to tackle your list.

I believe in the Magic!

Chowfancy Friends and enjoy the moments the holiday season brings.
