In the beginning

Planning and building the garden, May 12, 2024

In art study, form is the element of shape amongst the various elements that make up a work. Form is its physical nature. Being three dimensional, form can be created by combining shapes.

Form, is the way something happens.

A form can be enhanced by color or texture. Form is the way an artist arranges elements in the entirety of composition.

The debate…does life imitate art, or does art imitate life? In this case Chowfancy Garden inspiration stemmed from our visit to France in twenty-twenty three...

“Life imitates art far more than art imitates life”.

The gardens of Monet, Giverny, France
Claude Monet (1840-1926) painted Normandy’s Rouen Cathedral over thirty times. This painting of the cathedral is on display in his home at Giverny.

“To see we must forget the name of the thing we are looking at.”

The Impression

The subject is secondary, what I want to reproduce is what lies between the subject and myself. Create the Air.

{ Oscar-Claude Monet, French Impressionist, 1840-1926}

My fascination with the French Impressionist style of painting started long ago, but I finally made it to Paris, France last April of twenty-twenty three. Our trip was based around great food and great art. We had a wonderful week in France.

One goal was to see the paintings of Claude Monet in person, first at the L’Orangerie museum in Paris, and then towards the end of the trip to visit his home in Giverny to see the gardens and the home that inspired him. Visiting the gardens in April was beautiful, and although the water lilies were not yet in bloom, we were able to see all of his gorgeous tulips which are my absolute favorite flower! We were also able to imagine the beauty of the lilies as we stood by the pond. Such a serene and calming place.
